Autism Awareness Polo Shirts




With the help of a young artist, Dave Palacios, the design and idea that I had in my mind were all drawn on a paper. The polo shirts came out successfully. Free polo shirts were given away during ASCNMI's Autism Family Picnic on April 25. 2010.

Autism Awareness Month 2010

The following activities were conducted to help our community become aware of Autism. The CNMI is a great place to live and grow. There are hundreds of people, maybe more, affected by Autism in the CNMI. From those on the spectrum disorder to their families, loved ones, those that work with and finally, our community.

> March 31, 2010:
Finished Production on April Autism Awareness Month ad with Amber Mendiola
* Voluntarily provided her music and talent to make this ad a reality
* Has a brother with Autism and wants to be of assistance to this awareness movement
* Scheduled to play on MMV Channel 7 on KMCV weekly for the whole month of April

> April 1, 2010:
Governor Proclamation for April as Autism Awareness Month at this office at 4pm
* Chad and Larissa read the proclamation
* Autism Information was passed out
* Made the Front Page of Marianas Variety newspaper even though there were 8 proclamations same day
* More than 70 people participated

> April 7, 2010:
John Gonzales Show Live at 7pm
* Special Education paid for spot and our new ad to run
* Amber Video Ad played during breaks
* Larissa Larson and Vince Merfalen for parent testimonials
* Chad discussed his life at NMC and showed off his clay art
* TT discussed what activities were on agenda for April 2010
* CDC Statistics show 1 in 110 are born with Autism in America
* Replayed on April 11 and April 12 at 7pm
* No estimates of viewership

> April 9, 2010:
Rota Autism Conference at the Roundhouse at 10:30am
* DDC Paid for Lunch and gave ASCNMI time to present during their "meet your policy maker"
* TT presented on Autism in the CNMI, P&A Programs and Services and SS Disability Benefits
* CDC Statistics show 1 in 110 are born with Autism
* Tom Camacho did a Federal and Local Policy Update
* Lunch was something only Rota could provide!
* 15 folks in Attendance

> April 11, 2010:
Autism Walk at Last Command Post at 3pm
* Distance was 1.5 miles each way for a total of 3 miles
* Flat land to start, slope of up to 30% grade to finish 1.5
* Menu: Tangerines and Bananas with plenty of water
* Most folks made it both ways with their families
* Some asked for BBQ after event
* Lots of positive input and suggestions to do this activity more regularly
* 53 total folks signed up and participated

> April 13, 2010:
Autism Interview on KZMI/KCNM Radio Station at 7:30am
* Greg Borja and Tom Thornburgh of NMPASI were interviewed live by L. Tenorio
* Spoke about how people with Autism can live meaningful lives
* Discussed upcoming activities for April Autism Awareness Month
* Shared that Autism is the fastest growing DD in the world.
* CDC Statistics show 1 in 110 are born with Autism in America
* Also replayed on KCNM after live interview on KZMI on same day
* 3,000 Audience Estimates

> April 14, 15 and 16, 2010:
Autism Awareness at Hopwood Jr. High through R.O.P.E.S.
* Greg Borja and I met and worked with every 7th grader in P.E. Class.
* 18 classes with average of 28 students per class
* Total of 508 students for 55 minutes each class
* Discussed how Autism affects some people, like those who cannot speak
* CDC Statistics show 1 in 110 are born with Autism in America
* How to work with people with disabilities
* Disabilities are a natural part of the human experience
* Dignity and Respect for all!!!

> April 17, 2010:
Saipan Autism Conference at World Resort at 8am
* SPED paid for Conference up to 100 folks and offered childcare
* 73 total people signed up and participated in conference
* Four Lawmakers were present (Santos, Palacious, Villagomez, Tebuteb)
* Mr. Romeo Cueller Opened and Mrs. Barbara Merfalen closed with Pizzazz
* TT Presented on Autism in the CNMI
* NMPASI E.D. Presented SOPs and discussed collaboration with ASCNMI
* Tom Camacho did Policy Updates
* Lynn Corella presented "Thinking in Pictures"
* Parent Testimonials by Paulina, Carmella, Vince and Bobbi
* Lunch was Awesome!
* Mark and Jerry of Early Childhood presented on their work with kids with ASD
* Erica, Becky and Thelma presented on "Bullying"
* Mr. Vince Merfalen presented on "Parent Involvement" and "Autism Commission Bill"

> April 21, 2010:
Job Fair at NMC room D1, put on by NMC students for NMC students at 2pm
* Discussed what advocates do and what to concentrate on while studying at NMC
* Spoke about Autism Awareness Month as activities that our advocates do
* Shared posters and NMPASI brochures with the students
* Spoke briefly on Autism and how it is the fastest growing DD in the world

> April 23, 2010:
Polo Shirts arrive from Island Apparel paid for by Special Education Program
* 80 Polo Shirts with ASCNMI logo on front left chest and 1 foot poster on back of shirt
* 20 more children's sizes to come by next week or so according to Ms. April Sablan
* Discount on imaging and Island Apparel now has our logo and poster design on standby

> April 24, 2010:
Tinian Autism Conference at Fleming's Restaurant at 10am
* DDC paid for venue
* 25 total folks participated in this event
* Mr. Merfalen brought class as Master of Ceremonies
* Tom Camacho did Policy Updates
* Mark and Jerry of Early Childhood presented on their work with kids with ASD
* Lunch was delicious!
* Mary Payton of Hopwood did Lynn Corella's Presentation "Thinking in Pictures"

> April 25, 2010:
Family Picnic at the Minachom Atdao at 10am
* BBQ began at 7am
* Most folks arrived at 10:30 or so
* Live music by Ellena Sutton and the PP band broke loose at 11am
* Lunch was SUPER TOO MUCH FOOD at 11:45am
* Closed up at about 2pm as many had to leave for family gatherings or the Flame Tree Festival


These were the events that took place to help the CNMI learn more about Autism and its issues. The many folks involved in this collaboration effort are as follows: Suzanne Lizama - SPED (Polo Shirts/SPN Conference/John Gonzales Show est. $4000.00), PSS Staff- Mark Staal,Jerry Diaz, Lynn Corella, Mary Payton, Erica Thornburgh, Thelma Cing, and Becky Flores. Tom Camacho- Office of the Governor and Pam Sablan of the Governor's Council on DD for helping make Rota and Tinian Conferences possible with Policy Updates and actually paying and setting up our venues.

Aside from all this, there have also been some news articles and letters to the editor by Jaime Vergara and James Rayphand in line with our efforts this month to share information on Autism as it is very important to us.
